The Heavy Plasma Charger is death incarnate to most attacking ships. It has enough range to out-distance everything except Destroyers with mass drivers, zero minimum range so it can't be rushed, an AOE effect that only gets better with upgraded levels and very solid damage output. There are only three things that can defeat a base protected with lots of these: Destroyers armed with mass drivers (which takes quite a few levels to get to), ships that are fast enough to dodge its AOE (frigates with very powerful strafe engines, and this becomes harder as the Plasma Charger is upgraded and gets wider AOE), or a squad of very tough ships on a berserker rush that are able to take out these turrets before they fall (which would probably be quite costly to do).
